Due to the rapid nature of the new college athletics offseason and faced with a coaching search the day before the transfer portal opened, Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams wanted someone who could hit the ground sprinting. Williams said there were associated head coaches and assistants in the coaching pool, but knew a proven head coach was needed to replace Brian O’Connor after 22 years.
