When the Virginia football team opens preseason practice, one of the more interesting questions is simple: who will follow record-setting Brennan Armstrong in the starting quarterback seat? While it is not a 100% lock yet, that answer got a lot more clear this week.

Distant hope: The defense is as good or better than last year’s, we reverse our turnover ratio, and a stout group of running backs allow us to control the ball and the clock. And if I was Tony Eliot I’d have the staff drawing up some aggressive special teams plays.

I am an ever-optimistic football fan, but even us optimists must realize that this quarterback situation is extremely unlikely to produce anything close to a winning record this year.
