Observations From Scott Stadium After Virginia Opens With Win

The Virginia football team got the Tony Elliott era off to a winning start with a 34-17 victory against Richmond on Saturday. The performance wasn't flawless - two turnovers plus another uncostly fumble in the end zone and some periodic run defense troubles most notably - but most importantly it landed in the winner's circle. Here are some observations from Scott Stadium and the season-opening win.

Brennan Armstrong Is Still Really Good

Plenty of this offseason's chatter revolved around the offensive changes with a new coaching staff in town. Elliott and company want a more balanced offense (which they got in this game statistically with 259 rushing and 246 passing) so observers naturally wondered how that might impact Brennan Armstrong at quarterback after he threw it all over the yard last season. The season opener provided the first full-game look at Armstrong in the new system.

Three of our drives saved by penalties. Only the first TD was completely by our play. Three turnovers- a fumble, an interception, and an interception by us negated by penalty. A fourth turnover saved by the ref. We can't have those mistakes going forward. Jackson may have had a lot of tackles but he was out of position to make the stop at the line of scrimmage leaving gaping holes and tackle after giving up a lot of yards. Very disappointed in LB play in general. Receivers not getting open with only 3 , yet wide open receivers with 4-5. Emphasis with run and TE hurt the overall offense. 3 open dropped passes, and one contested drop by Wicks that hit him in both hands that would have been a TD. Cypress played excellently against the deep ball! 33 Ahern was a force. Watching him play the run and recognized it was a pass, dropping back for the int was fantastic.
