With eight scholarship offers in the fold, King George (VA) athlete prospect Mekhai White is already a coveted member of the class of 2024. The University of Virginia is one of the eight schools that has offered the 6’3”, 175-pound sophomore, who was in Charlottesville on Saturday for the Cavalier football program’s first “Junior Day” recruiting event under new head coach Tony Elliott.

White, who has visited UVA several times before, says he spent time speaking with Elliott as well as assistant coaches Des Kitchings, Marques Hagans and Clint Sintim, as well as graduate assistant coach Charles Mack. He was asked for his first impression and what message Coach Elliott had for him.

“They were really family oriented and really easy to talk to,” White said of the new staff, who reaffirmed the scholarship offer extended by the previous coaching staff.

“The message to me was that I am a priority for them,” White said. “And I can help change the culture at UVA.”

A versatile performer on a King George team that went 10-1 in 2021, White saw action at wide receiver, where he earned first-team all-area and second-team all-region honors, as well as safety and outside linebacker. He was offered by former Cavalier head coach Bronco Mendenhall as a wide receiver. New coach Tony Elliott is recruiting White as a receiver too.

Just a sophomore, White is in no rush to make his college commitment. He has visited multiple schools, however, including Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Boston College, Maryland, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and West Virginia join UVA in having offered.

What’s next for the promising prospect in terms of recruiting visits? Is a return trip to UVA in the plans?

“Yes I am going to visit UVA again,” White answered. “I’m not sure when that will be but I will be back. I am visiting Virginia Tech on the 29th.”

Outside of recruiting, White, whose team enjoyed an undefeated regular season before falling in the playoffs to eventual Class 6 state champ Varina, said, “I am going to work on my craft this off-season. Mainly focusing on my size and speed. We are getting a lot of players back that can really impact the team success.”

Wiggins Visits Virginia Too

King George boasts two top class of 2024 wide receiver prospects who measure in at around 6’3”. White and Chanz Wiggins make a formidable team in high school, and Virginia and other schools are hoping they can do the same on the next level.

Wiggins, who boasts offers from Maryland, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, was also in Charlottesville this past Saturday.
