Limited tickets remain

With classes out and exams on deck, the academic year is winding down at Virginia. While the athletics arm still hopefully has several weeks remaining as spring teams march toward the postseason, UVA did hold its annual Hoos Choice Awards on Wednesday. The awards are for performances from April 2025-March 2026.

The Cavaliers honored quarterback Chandler Morris as the top male athlete with the WINA Award. Morris helped lead Virginia to a program-record 11 wins in his only season in Charlottesville. That included the team’s first bowl win since 2018 when the Hoos took down Missouri in the Gator Bowl. Morris posted 2,245 yards of total offense as the quarterback this season while providing 21 total touchdowns between passing and rushing.

Claire Curzan was selected as the top female athlete with the IMP Award. She won six titles at the NCAA Championships in March as the program won its sixth straight National Championship. She captured the 100 and 200 backstroke individual titles. Curzan was the ACC Championship Most Valuable Swimmer while winning two events there.

Other awards honored the top rookies. Chance Mallory of the men’s basketball team was the Male Rookie of the Year after he averaged 9.3 points with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ration that ranked second in the ACC. He helped UVA win 30 games and make the NCAA Tournament. Sara Curtis represented the women’s swimming tem as the Female Rookie of the Year. She helped the team win four relays at the NCAA Championships and finished second in the 50 freestyle.

UVA also honored football’s Will Bettridge (1*15*41 Award), swimming’s Maximus Williamson (Comeback of the Year), women’s lacrosse’s Kate Galica (UVA’s Distinguished Athlete Scholarship Award), and women’s soccer’s Victoria Safradin (Ralph Sampson Scholarship Award) among others. The event’s team awards were as follows:

  • Women’s Basketball – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Romi Levy
  • Men’s Cross Country – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Gary Martin
  • Women’s Cross Country – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Gillian Bushee
  • Field Hockey – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Mia Abello
  • Football – John Acree Memorial Award – James Jackson
  • Men’s Golf – F. Dixon Brooke Memorial Award – Ben James
  • Women’s Golf – William E. Eacho Memorial Award – Elsie MacCleery
  • Men’s Lacrosse – Henry Gaver Memorial Award – Joey Terenzi
  • Women’s Lacrosse – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Corey White
  • Rowing – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Riley Richardson
  • Men’s Soccer – Stanley Lerner Memorial Award – Umberto Pelà
  • Women’s Soccer – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Lia Godfrey
  • Softball – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Kelsey Hackett
  • Men’s Squash – Coach’s Award for Excellence – JP Tew
  • Women’s Squash – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Claire Minnis
  • Men’s Swimming & Diving – Brooke Maury Memorial Award – Matthew Heilman
  • Women’s Swimming & Diving – Diane Montgomery Greene Memorial Award – Carly Novelline
  • Men’s Tennis – Norton Pritchett Memorial Award – Ty Switzer
  • Women’s Tennis – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Melodie Collard
  • Men’s Track & Field – Henry Cummings Memorial Award – TBD
  • Women’s Track & Field – Z Society – The Lou Onesty Memorial Award – TBD
  • Men’s Indoor Track & Field – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Gary Martin
  • Women’s Indoor Track & Field – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Tatum David
  • Volleyball – Coach’s Award for Excellence – Kate Johnson
  • Wrestling – David Senft Memorial Award – Gable Porter

Virginia also selected plays of the year. The UVA football team made the Male Play of the Year with Ja’Son Prevard’s interception to seal the win against Florida State. That set off the memorable field storming at Scott Stadium. The women’s swimming team made the Female Play of the Year as the 400 freestyle relay team posted a new NCAA record time of 3:05.26 on the way to that title as Curzan, Curtis, Madi Mintenko, and Anna Moesch teamed up for the fast swim.
