With spring sports now under way at Virginia, Paul Chang made a bit of a splash for the men’s golf team at th Puerto Rico Classic. He placed 9th among 89 competitors for his third top 10 finish in the last two seasons.
Part of the final round also provided some excitement for Chang. He dropped a hole-in-one on the 168-yard Par 3 16th hole. That became the program’s first ace since Ashton Poole made one in the 2019 ACC Championships. Chang finished with a tournament total of 206 to set a new career low for the senior.
The hole-in-one just adds to what’s already been an incredible story for Chang. He originally competed for the UVA Club team for two years before joining the varsity roster. After persisting with coach Bowen Sargent, Chang finally got a roster spot after impressing at a U.S. Amateur qualifier. That was just the start of a run that caught the attention of the amateur golf world. .In th summer of 2023, Chang played at the 123rd U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills in Colorado, advanced out of stroke play, and into the round of 16 in match play.
Once on the varsity roster at UVA, Chang has averaged a 72.11 over 35 rounds of golf. He now has three top 10 finishes.
The ace brought up some memories for Sabre fans in this thread. Multiple fans shared stories of their own hole-in-one feats. That included a wind-aided shot in Scotland, a Captain’s Choice tournament ace, a St. Patrick’s Day dunk, and more. What about you? Have you ever recorded a hole-in-one?
