Limited tickets remain

The Virginia football team wrapped up a relatively quiet spring practice period with its annual Spring Game last weekend. UVA’s defense won the final scrimmage 59-40, capitalizing on a modified scoring system that rewarded turnovers, forced three-and-outs, and more.

The afternoon at Scott Stadium provided the only real glimpse at the team this spring, but even that was limited with no television coverage. Still, there were some hints from these 15 practice sessions that the Hoos may be leaning into their competitive depth theory again this season. Last fall, a heavy rotation on defense and multiple contributors on offense propelled the Cavaliers to a program-record 11 wins.

Of course, many of the key names from that team are gone. The offense lost quarterback Chandler Morris, running back J’Mari Taylor, receiver Trell Harris, tight end Sage Ennis, and center Brady Wilson. On defense, Virginia lost players like Devin Neal, James Jackson, Jahmeer Carter, Mitchell Melton, and more. On the other hand, some regular contributors return with Drake Metcalf, Noah Josey, McKale Boley, Fisher Camac, Jason Hammond, Anthony Britton, Donavon Platt, Will Bettridge, Daniel Sparks, and others as examples.

So where does that leave the Wahoos? On the Hoos On Podcast late this week, the show did a stock up or stock down segment for the offense, the defense, and the team as a whole. Part of the conversation there focused on the offense being stock down slightly because of unknowns and questions behind a returning offensive line and stock up a little for the defense because there are more answers to the questions on that side of the ball.

With a tougher schedule on paper and one less home game, the guess post-spring for the team is a tougher one to make. For the first time since 2018, however, Virginia went into the offseason with posititive momentum as the program ended the 2025 season with a win in the Gator Bowl. The last time UVA exited the season on a winning note came after the 2018 Belk Bowl. So stock slightly up may be the answer there.
