As this transfer portal cycle keeps churning, the Virginia football team added another name to its double-digit commitment list. Cam Ross, a James Madison receiver and kick returner last season, became the latest to make the call for the Cavaliers on Monday.
Ross visited UVA earlier this month and fielded interest from Virginia Tech and Central Florida as well. Ryan Straining and Parker St. Pierre of Always On Sports Agency confirmed his commitment to the Hoos.

Ross brings a potential boost on both offense and special teams. At JMU, he started 9 of 13 games at receiver and earned Third Team All-Sun Belt honors as a return specialist. For the season, he posted 37 catches for 443 yards and 3 touchdowns plus 366 kickoff return yards with a touchdown. That included a season-high 149 all-purpose yards in a win at UNC where he had 10 rushing, 107 receiving, and 32 return yards. He averaged 28.2 yards per kickoff return and took one 94 yards for a touchdown against. While 13 returns didn’t qualify for the NCAA leader list, his average would have been seventh best nationally.
Prior to the 2024 season with the Dukes, Ross played for four years at UConn. He registered 114 catches for 1,356 yards and 6 touchdowns with the Huskies. Injuries in 2021 and 2022 limited him to just 5 games in those seasons so he gained an extra year of eligibility via a medical hardship waiver.
With Ross in the fold, the Cavaliers have pulled in 16 commitments this cycle. Fisher Camac (DE/LB), Jahmal Edrine (WR), Jacob Holmes (DL), Daniel Kaelin (QB), Maddox Marcellus (LB), Monroe Mills (OL), Cazeem Moore (DE), Chandler Morris (QB), Devin Neal (S), Hunter Osborne (DL), Ja’son Prevard (DB), J’Mari Taylor (RB), Kevin Wigenton II (OL), Brady Wilson (OL), and Tyshawn Wyatt (OL) also chose UVA. That doesn’t count long snapper Bryce Robinson, who also has committed to Virginia out of Kennesaw State.
As that list shows, the focus on offense has been on offensive line, quarterback, and receiver primarily. The Hoos added four linemen, two quarterbacks, and two receivers plus a running back on that side of the ball. UVA, which ranked 107th nationally in scoring offense last season at 22.7 points per game, lost multiple quarterbacks, linemen, and receivers so those moves makes sense.
There should be plenty of competition for snaps at receiver as that position group experienced significant turnover. Top wideout Malachi Fields along with JR Wilson, Jaden Gibson, and Ethan Davies all picked new schools via the transfer portal. Chris Tyree, a Notre Dame transfer that suited up for the Hoos last season, also finished his career. That leaves Trell Harris, a Kent State transfer that played in only four games last year due to injury, Kameron Courtney, Suderian Harrison, and Andre Greene Jr. as the main returnees with experience.
