While the Virginia football team won’t see Virginia Tech until late November, many of UVA’s other fall sports teams don’t have to wait that long for a showdown with the Hokies. October is packed with multiple contests against the in-state rivals.
The Commonwealth Clash begins Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. The all-sports, points-based program keeps a year-long score for Virginia vs. VT in head-to-head competitions. UVA has won four straight and nine times overall in the Commonwealth Clash.
Men’s soccer is up first. The Hoos host the Hokies at 8 p.m. on Friday night in game that will be carried on the ACC Network. Fans in attendance can claim a Cavaliers Men’s Soccer scarf while supplies last. Virginia in unbeaten across its last four meetings with Tech and owns a 44-6-7 edge all time. There is one point on the line in the Commonwealth Clash. George Gelnovatch will hit 400 wins with his team’s next victory this season.
Volleyball follows next with a same-week home-and-home set against Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers host the Hokies on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium before heading to Blacksburg on Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. Each match is worth a half point in the Clash standings. Virginia has a 45-40 edge in the all-time series.
On that same Friday night, the UVA women’s soccer team is in Blacksburg to face VT. That 7 p.m. game is worth a point for the Clash. The Hoos lead the all-time series 24-4-2.
Finally, the last weekend in October brings the ACC Championships for cross country to the table. Virginia Tech hosts this year’s meet on Friday, Oct. 30. One point for the men’s race and one point for the women’s race will be up for grabs because the Commonwealth Clash point is awarded to the team that finishes higher at the ACC Championships. The Cavaliers finished ahead of the Hokies in both men’s and women’s races last fall.
There’s one other October matchup that doesn’t count toward the competition. UVA and VT will meet in a fall ball exhibition baseball game Saturday, Oct. 3 in Fredericksburg. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. News came out this week that the two programs will not play a full ACC series this spring due to conference scheduling. The programs likely will schedule a mid-week game that will count toward the Clash.
Following the October flurry, the football game is set for Saturday, Nov. 28 in Blacksburg. That will be the last UVA-VT Commonwealth Clash matchup of the 2026 portion of the competition. Things picks back up on Jan. 10, 2027 with the women’s basketball teams meeting at the John Paul Jones Arena.
