When Virginia and NC State met for their season opening football game last week, it was the only conference matchup between Power 4 opponents. The Hoos, of course, rolled to a 34-8 victory in a game they dominated and led wire to wire. Between the lopsided win and a 1-0 ACC start after going 11-3 last season, Virginia got plenty of attention this week. The Sabre social sweep dives in.

First, there was game day itself. Per ESPN's PR account on social media, the UVA-NCSU game was the second most watched of the weekend behind only UNC-TCU. The Hoos' game drew a solid 3.2 million average viewers with a peak of 4.0 million viewers. Remember, these ratings don't include the ACC Network and Virginia's game was featured there from an All-22 camera view as well, which likely impacted the numbers at least a little bit.

After the dust settled from Saturday, however, the chatter about the Hoos really began. It seems that the margin of victory caught the attention of conference and national analysts. And the general vibe? Virginia sent a message.

The conversation has to start with former UVA QB Kurt Benkert. He simply said "I think this UVA team is the real deal" while giving some film breakdown to back it up.

The Ruffino & Joe Show said "Virginia Just Sent A Warning Shot To The Entire ACC", while Gramlich & Mac Lain recapped it starting with "Shoutout to the Hoos. It looked good on TV. It looked really good." And the Bunch Formation show with Chris Vannini and David Ubben called it a "STATEMENT" win.

On the Saturday vs Sunday show, the hosts John Barban and Geoff Dover took a look with the title "UVA Steamrolls NC State In A Near-Perfect Football Game." The Solid Verbal College Football Show had a similar reaction, saying "Virginia Just Demolished NC State" in its video.

Landon Tengwall, who played at Penn State and was a teammate with Beau Pribula, provided an X's and O's breakdown of the game. It's titled "Why Virginia's Offense Is The Perfect Fit For Beau Pribula" and has more than 7,000 views at the moment. The video caught Sabre fans' attention during the week so Preston Willett brought Tengwall on to The Hoos On Podcast for a conversation too. Both are embedded here.

For an X's and O's look from the other side of the field, there's another YouTube video out there from an NC State observer. During the preseason, the sweep featured this Trinity Road Times account talking about pass progressions for NCSU quarterback CJ Bailey. That same account dove into the film room for a look at what turned out to be a bad day for Bailey and the Wolfpack.

If you want more from the NC State side, there are videos talking about defensive coordinator DJ Eliot's comments after the game. Pack Power produced it and called the comments 'baffling' in the title. Locked On Wolfpack also reacted with "WHAT?" in its video.

Other Week 0 Interest

With the game in Week 0, it also drew interest from places where UVA normally may not have been on the radar. There were a handful of Instagram accounts that pushed out content about the game, Charlottsville, and more. This account from Caden Davis has more than 140,000 followers and pops up at games. He's at LSU this week for the Clemson game, for example, but with Virginia being the main show last week, he was here at the game. Here's one of several videos he published.

Sabre subscriber Cav113 ran into someone at the game that also produced a video. This one is from James Knorr, who came down from Ohio to watch.

Hoo Hoops

Virginia fans will only have to wait approximately a month to see Ryan Odom’s team in the John Paul Jones Arena. UVA annoucned an exhibition game against Richmond for Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. That’s now part of Homecomings weekend as the football team hosts Syracuse on Saturday (kickoff time will be announced at a later date).

In the build-up to the season, the Hoos released another short “Proving Grounds” video this week. Here it is.

There was also this Corner Media Company interview out this week. He discussed why he stayed at Virginia and more.

On the women’s basketball front, the Hoos picked up a commitment this week from 2027 post Lisa Sirgi. The 6’5” prospect is a top 100 recruit and she’s featured in this interview below. It’s embedded but you’ll have to click over to YouTube to view because of the video owners’ settings.
