If there’s a championship swim meet happening on the world stage and there’s a Virginia swimmer nearby, chances are high for a record-breaking performance. That’s been the case for several years now and it remained true at some major summer meets this past week. The Sabre social sweep dives in.
Tyler Fenwick, UVA Swimming Senior Associate Head Coach, often keeps count on X. Hoos currently hold 18 different world records!

Kate Douglass and Sarah Curtis became the latest to set world records, while Gretchen Walsh claimed another championship meet record too. Douglass and Walsh were on a record relay as well. Long-form interviews from outside of meets with all three can be found here (Douglass with Unfiltered Waters), here (Douglass with USA Swimming), here (Walsh with Unfiltered Waters), and here (Curtis with Arena).
First, let’s look at the alumni record breakers. Douglass and Walsh worked their magic at the 2026 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in California. Douglass wowed the swimming world with a blistering 23.19 world record in the 50-meter freestyle event. In the video below, you can hear the astonishment in commentator Rowdy Gaines’ voice at that time. Taylor Ruck said in an article with The Athletic that the number was shocking.
Douglass herself called the time “crazy fast” and said she had to do a “a few double takes” to see that it was real.
Here’s the record swim and a SwimSwam interview with Douglass.
Meanwhile, Walsh continued to dominate in the butterfly, which has become a regular deal for her.
In this Pan Pac swim, she set a Championship Record in the 100 fly with a time of 55.15. She won the race by nearly two seconds. At the moment, she owns the top 18 times ever recorded in the event. Walsh’s swim and an interview are in this video.
That duo teamed up as part of two relay records too. In the 4x100-meter medley relay at Pan Pacs, they teamed with Katharine Berkoff and McKenzie Siroky for a Championship Record of 3:50.43. In the 4x100 freestyle relay, they joined Torri Huske and Simone Manuel to win the event and set the American Record and Championship Record of 3:29.32. Within that swim, Douglass threatened the world record in the 100-meter freestyle and missed it by just .01.
Here are those races.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a current Cavalier swimmer ripped off her own world record. Sarah Curtis, a rising sophomore for the Hoos, took part in the European Aquatics Championships in Paris and ripped off a 26.56 in the 50-meter backstroke to set the new world record. She broke the previous best time in prelims before going faster in the final for Team Italy. She’s the first Italian woman to win a 50m backstroke gold at the European Championships.

On Virginia Football Opponents
The Virginia football team is closing in fast on the season opener. UVA hosts NC State at Scott Stadium on Saturday, August 29 at 3:30 p.m. The Cavaliers finished with a program-record 11 wins last season, which included a win against Missouri in the Gator Bowl.
As kickoff gets closer, Virginia fans may be turning their attention to some of the opponents on the schedule. With that in mind, the sweep found videos for some of the early season opponents.
This Trinity Road Times video from YouTube takes an X’s and O’s style look at NC State quarterback CJ Bailey. It’s an interesting video, in part, because the first two play breakdowns feature the UVA-NCSU game from last season, which the Wolfpack won 35-31. It mentions per its analysis that the Cavaliers played a lot of Cover 1 defense in the game.
One note on that season opener: ESPN plans to run an alternate viewing option on the ACC Network.
<script async src="https://platform.x.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>In addition to the ESPN telecast of the Week 0 opener between #UVa and NC State, there will also be an All-22 alternate viewing option on ACC Network. That’s per an ESPN press release.

In other opponent news, Big 12 Football Addiction channel released a video about West Virginia’s fall camp with what it titled “very good” news. UVA faces WVU on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. It’s a neutral site game in Charlotte, N.C.
Similar to the ACC Network, Conference USA has released some team preview videos. That includes this half hour plus look at Delaware, who Virginia faces in game three. The Hoos host the Blue Hens on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Scott Stadium. A kickoff time has not been announced.
More Outside Perspectives
The sweep provided a bunch of season previews last week that came from places that don’t cover Virginia on a daily basis. There were a few that the article missed. Check those out below plus an extra short.
First up is this video from Nard Dawg Sports, which takes a quick four-minute look at the Hoos. The caption includes something a lot of people are likely thinking: “Now comes the difficult part: proving it was not a one-year miracle.”
This video comes from a Miami channel called Carl Talking College. The segment is titled “Can UVA Surprise The ACC?”
Next up is from “Preferred Walk-On: A College Football Show.” Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman take about 10 minutes to discuss the Hoos.
A channel from TreyMcFB, which describes itself as being from an aspiring content creator called Virginia a darkhorse team this year in this short.
