While winter sports teams begin the stretch run at Virginia, college football never rests even months away from kickoff. For the Cavaliers, a couple of news items came through this week.

UVA announced that its Spring Game will be held on Saturday, April 18 at Scott Stadium. A time for the event has not been released. There are men’s lacrosse (noon) and baseball games (1 p.m.) that day so that could impact the decision.

With the date now on the calendar, fans discussed if last season’s success will push attendance at the Spring Game. The exhibition has not been a highly attended event in recent years.

Keep in mind, Scott Stadium will host the men’s lacrosse NCAA Championships from May 23-25. The men’s and women’s lacrosse teams will play a double header at Scott Stadium already on Saturday, March 21 with the men’s team facing Utah at 11 a.m. and the women’s team taking on Syracuse at 2 p.m.

Could there be consideration to hold a lacrosse-football doubleheader at Scott Stadium as an additional test run in April and drive more attendance to both? The last time the Hoos held a double feature like that was back in 2011 and a hail storm hit the area.

Whether a lot of fans decide to make the trip to Scott Stadium for the Spring Game or not, it appears that last season’s success is making an impact on potential 2026 attendance. The Hoos finished 11-3 last season, the most wins in program history. They went 7-1 in the ACC Regular Season and wrapped up the campaign as the Gator Bowl Champions. That marked just the second time in the last 15 seasons that the program ended on a win, the other being in 2018 when the Cavaliers won the Belk Bowl.

Based on early returns of season ticket sales, the success of 2025 and ending the season with a mood-boosting victory has increased interest. Eric Ward, Virginia Associate Athletics Director for Revenue Genereation & Marketing, noted on social media this week that those season ticket sales are two months ahead of last year’s pace.

Virginia opens the season in Brazil when it faces NC State on Aug. 29. The home opener at Scott Stadium is set for Sept. 12 against Norfolk State. That will be the first of six home games on the schedule.
