If you pick any Hoos at Scott Stadium this season and ask them if they’re a Kam Robinson fan, the answer likely will be unanimous and quick. Yes!

Robinson, a star linebacker for Virginia, has had that kind of impact on the team’s 9-2 record so far this season. Among the highlights: 2 interceptions returned for touchdowns, a safety for the game-winning points against Washington State, a blocked punt against Wake Forest, and a recovered fumble against Stanford. Those fall in beside 64 tackles as well.

Robinson became the only Football Bowl Subdivision player in the last 20 years with a blocked punt, interception return for touchdown, and a fumble recovery in the same season per Sports-Reference.com. He has been named ACC Linebacker of the Week three times, receiving that honor in nearly half of the eight games he’s played this season. Robinson is the only player in program history to do that in a single season. He’s only the second Cavalier player to have 2 INTs for touchdowns in a season as well.

With 64 tackles, he’s ranked second on the team behind only Devin Neal and had the team lead before exiting the Duke game early last week. He ranks in the top 20 in ACC for tackles. In conference games only, Robinson ranks 9th with 56 tackles and is tied for 8th in tackles per game with 8.0.

The fan club goes beyond the stands, though. He’s got fans in his own locker room too. Virginia defensive end Mitchell Melton, who transferred in from Ohio State, had heard about Robinson’s ability on the field but playing with him on defense has brought heightened respect. Melton, who ranks 11th in the ACC himself with 10 tackles for loss, called Robinson a “force” on the Hoos On Podcast from TheSabre.com Podcast Network this week.

Making Robinson’s case for ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Melton dropped praise on his teammate.

“The film says it for itself,” Melton said. “I think the way in which he’s played week in and week out has been - I heard about Kam Robinson when I came here and I heard about like the legend of him and what he is as a player, but then to see it, it’s just like a whole other thing and I don’t know if I’ve seen anyone else play at this high a level, especially in our conference.”

With one game to play next week against rival Virginia Tech, UVA fans currently are just waiting and hoping to see Robinson in action. He left the Duke game early with a knee injury and did not play the majority of the second half. Though Cavalier coach Tony Elliott initially indicated the scans were clear during the game, there will be no official word on his status for a while still with the Hoos on a bye week right now.

Regardless of that final game, though, Robinson seems like a lock for All-ACC honors of some kind. He was an honorable mention pick last season with 64 tackles in 11 games with 5 sacks, 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery. He has similar numbers this season with more game-changing plays as mentioned above.

Those selections will be announced in early December.
