The Virginia football team continues to build through winter workouts and soon will dive into spring practice next month. UVA begins those sessions in less than two weeks and will conclude on Saturday, April 12.
That’s the day of the annual Spring Game at Scott Stadium. The Hoos, of course, have used varying formats through the years for that final practice date. During his tenure, current coach Tony Elliott has leaned toward an actual blue vs. white game with some modifications. In other years under previous coaches, there were different scoring methods, offense vs. defense, and so on depending on the year. Of course, the Spring Game at Virginia has not been a stadium-filling festivity either way.
It may not be an option in the future, though. CBS Sports author Brandon Marcello reported on Feb. 12 that “several programs plan to eliminate public spring games this offseason” and that some coaches are pushing for more similarities to the NFL offseason model.
CBS Sports cited sources that said some “FBS coaches discussed a potential proposal to eliminate spring practices and implement OTAs in the late spring and early summer months at the American Football Coaches Association annual meeting in January.” Some ACC coaches are quoted anonymously throughout the article.
With the winter transfer portal impacting roster sizes for the spring semester along with injury rehabilitation from the previous season and a second transfer portal in April (it opens on April 16-25 this year), coaches may see value in having more organized activities in the summer. That would allow the roster to be closer to complete and injured players a longer period to recover, which could make the training time more valuable. Currently, much of the summer is focused on strength and conditioning with that part of the staff, while players lead any sport-specific activities outside of the coaching staff purview.
With spring games maybe fading away soon, what do you think Hoo fans? Vote in the poll and then check out this message board thread on the topic as well.
