It’s been a busy few weeks for the Virginia football team. From two announced donations to the recruiting frenzy of the transfer portal, there’s been a lot of news for the Hoos.

For the donations, the first was the largest one-time cash contribution and the largest non-capital gift in program history. That anonymous multi-million dollar donation, an undisclosed amount, was followed by another. A second anonymous donor pledged to match every dollar contributed to the Football Enhancement Fund, up to $3 million.

Kevin Miller, the executive director of the Virginia Athletics Foundation, said in a UVA Today interview that the donations have helped the recruiting pitch for the program.

“Our coaches are using it to their benefit in their recruiting conversations.” he said. “They’re pointing to this and showing these recruits, ‘Virginia is committed, we’re all in, and we’re invested in your success, not only in the NIL space, but also, we want to make sure you have a positive student-athlete experience while you’re here. And we’re investing in this nutrition space, because we realize how important this is.’ ... We can’t have investments and expectations in different places. We’ve got to bring that investment up if we want to compete for championships. We’re fortunate to have some people who have stepped up to recognize that need and want to put the resources in place to allow us to do so.”

Of course, those donations occurred around transfer mania. December is portal palooza month for college football after all.

Virginia has been an active presence in the transfer market the past four weeks and continues to host visitors this weekend as it looks to close out the cycle. Up to now, the Hoos have added 15 players from the transfer portal as an offseason reboot of the roster takes place.

Offensively, receiver Jahmal Edrine (Purdue), quarterback Daniel Kaelin (Nebraska), quarterback Chandler Morris (North Texas), running back J’Mari Taylor (North Carolina Central), offensive lineman Kevin Wigenton II (Illinois), offensive lineman Brady Wilson (UAB), offensive lineman Tyshawn Wyatt (JMU), and offensive lineman Monroe Mills (Louisville) make up the current list.

Defensively, linebacker/edge Fisher Camac (UNLV), defensive lineman Jacob Holmes (Fresno State), linebacker Maddox Marcellus (Eastern Kentucky), defensive end Cazeem Moore (Elon), safety Devin Neal (Louisville), defensive lineman Hunter Osborne (Alabama), and defensive back Ja’son Prevard (Morgan State) are in the fold. UVA also added long snapper Bryce Robinson (Kennesaw State), but has not officially announced the signing.

Following 3-7, 3-9, and 5-7 seasons under coach Tony Elliott, the positive donation news and some traction in the transfer portal created a little bit of offseason momentum. Message board poster HooSince94 posted that “It’s crazy in a matter of a month and a week. I’m excited for fall again for the first time in a long time. I can’t ever be cautiously optimistic ... it’s always all in or the sky is falling. I set myself up every year though lol I’m ready to get my heart broken again guys!”
