The Virginia football team had an active December in the transfer portal, bringing in 11 commitments during the month. While the Hoos remain in the market for more additions - offensive line, receiver, defensive end, and cornerback being among the priorities - they’ve received some good news the last few days from their own locker room too.

Linebacker Kam Robinson, defensive tackle Jahmeer Carter, and punter Daniel Sparks all announced they would return to UVA. That trio, of course, served as regular starters the past two seasons for the Hoos. All were productive.

Robinson ranked second on the team in tackles with 64, trailing only safety Jonas Sanker. The 6’2”, 234-pounder has made 135 stops in 23 career games. He also has 6 sacks, 3 interceptions, and a forced fumble. This past season, Robinson tallied 5 sacks to lead the defense.

Carter has rattled off 44 straight starts for the Wahoos while playing in 55 career games. He has made 134 tackles with 7.5 tackles for loss. At 6’2”, 309 pounds, he helps take up blockers in the middle of the defense. Coaches routinely have praised him for his approach and work ethic within the program.

Sparks has earned All-ACC recognition in two of the last three seasons. He was an honorable mention pick this past fall while he averaged 44.6 yards per punt and a second-team choice in 2022 when he averaged 45.9 yards per punt. He’s had at least one 60+ yard kick in each of his three seasons at Virginia and he placed 24.6% of his punts inside the 20 last season. He also added kickoff duties to his plate in 2024.

For a team that missed out on a bowl bid with a 5-7 finish and looking to build more depth, bringing these players back provides a boost. That’s particularly true on the defensive side of the ball. Robinson and Carter will be joined by defensive linemen Jacob Holmes, Hunter Osborne, and Cazeem Moore plus linebacker Maddox Marcellus, who all came to the Cavaliers as portal pick-ups.
