Football season is just around the corner for Virginia fans. ACC Kickoff is set for next week in Charlotte, while the Cavaliers open the 2022 campaign against Richmond on Sept. 3 at 12:30 p.m.

Let’s take a look back at the 2021 season, and see what we have to look forward to in the fall in this “By the Numbers” breakdown.

Virginia By The Numbers

The number of games played under new head coach Tony Elliot. The previous Clemson offensive coordinator hopes to continue his ACC success in his first season at the University of Virginia. This will be a fresh start for the Hoos.

Jersey number worn by Dontayvion Wicks and Anthony Johnson, both returners from the 2021 season. Wicks led the team with 1,203 receiving yards, while Johnson tied with Joey Blount to lead the team with 3 interceptions.

Turnovers were an issue for the offense under Robert Anae, with the Cavaliers tied for 65th nationally in total turnovers last season and never ranking higher than 62nd in his tenure. New offensive coordinator Desmond Kitchings hopes to improve those numbers.

Incoming players from both the transfer portal and 2022 commits. Virginia will welcome one four star and 15 three star commits this fall. Additionally, the Hoos will gain seven players from the transfer portal from schools like Miami, Michigan State, and Wisconsin.

Touchdown passes by Armstrong in the 2021 season. The quarterback tied for 12th in the nation for his scoring passes, which ranked fourth in the ACC behind Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett (42), Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman (39), and NC State’s Devin Leary (35).

The number in percent for third down conversions. The Cavalier offense was successful on third down attempts nearly half the time. That ranked 17th in this category nationally and was second in the ACC to only Wake Forest (49.78%).

Jersey number worn and kept by Keytaon Thompson, who led the team with 78 receptions. Last season, Thompson caught passes for 990 yards and rushed for 247 yards. This versatile player earned second team All-ACC honors last season and second team All-ACC in the preseason selection.

Total tackles made by Virginia linebacker Nick Jackson. Jackson was the ACC’s top tackler. He finished with 54 solo stops and 63 assisted. The 2021 captain was named to the 2022 preseason All-ACC second team by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.

The total kick return yards for UVA last season. Virginia ranked 124th nationally in the category last season. The Hoos attempted just 14 returns all season. Only nine teams made fewer attempts.

Total points scored by the Virginia football team. UVA ranked 39th (tie) in this category among FBS teams. In contrast, the Wahoos allowed 382 points. That ranked 98th nationally.

Total tackles made by the Cavaliers last season. Jackson led the team, but the Hoos had 18 players with 10 or more tackles on the season. This includes returning players like Anthony Johnson, Antonio Clary, Coen King, Hunter Stewart, Darrius Bratton, Josh Ahern, Aaron Faumui, Jahmeer Carter, Fentrell Cypress II, and Olasunkonmi Agunloye in addition to Jackson.

The number of rushing yards allowed by Virginia last season. The Hoos ranked 120th out of 130 FBS teams with that number. They also ranked 123rd in rushing yards allowed per game at 225.83. UVA’s defense will try to get back on track with new defensive coordinator John Rudzinski, who produced a top 20 run defense in three of his four years as DC at Air Force.

Returning receiving yards for Virginia. The Cavaliers’ top three receivers are returning, as well as six others, that contributed to the wahoos’ 3,330 total receiving yards for the 2021 season. Dontayvion Wicks (1,203), Keytaon Thompson (990), and Billy Kemp IV (725) led the receiving yards category for the Hoos last season.

Number of passing yards thrown by Brennan Armstrong last season, the fourth most passing yards in the history of the ACC. This number earned him multiple ACC QB of the Week awards, third team All-ACC honors, the Dudley Award, Manning Award Finalist honors, and Pro Football Focus Honorary All-American recognition. It marked one of several school records set by Armstrong last season.

Total offensive yards for Virginia last season. Virginia ranked 12th among all NCAA FBS football teams in total yards and 3rd in yards per game last season.
