The Virginia football program held a huge recruiting weekend in Week 0 when it blasted NC State 34-8 in the season opener. A visitor from that late August showdown decided that he wanted to be in Charlottesville more often in the future. Quarterback Grayson Clary committed to the Cavaliers on Sunday.
Clary became the first commitment from the 2028 recruiting class a little less than a month after UVA hosted that big group of recruits. He shared his announcement on social media.
The 6'2", 215-pound junior compiled a long list of suitors on the recruiting trail. Clary's reported offer list included Duke from the ACC as well as Oklahoma State, Mississippi, Oregon, Wisconsin, Central Florida, and JMU among many others. That list grew quickly throughout May and June.
The recruiting service rankings reflect someone with those types of offers. On3 ranks Clary as a 4-star recruit and as the No. 33 quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class. 247 Sports rates him as a 3-star recruit and as the No. 61 QB recruit in the class.
Clary built that interest while playing last season at DW Daniel High School in South Carolina this season and at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia this season. While at Daniel High lat fall, he threw for 2,800 yards and 41 touchdowns while also posting 9 rushing TDs per Rivals. That led to First-Team all-state honors. Clary transferred to Rabun Gap this offseason and he's off to a fast start there. In this season's first six games, he's piled up 1,686 passing yards with 10 touchdowns.
Those statistics show the dual threat capability that Virginia has liked in the Tony Elliott era. Clary reports a 4.84 40-yard dash time and a 4.23 shuttle time on his Hudl profile. He also listed a 29-inch vertical. View Clary's highlights on his Hudl profile as well.
“I think it’s the best time because they are checking all the boxes I’m wanting in a program,” Clary told On3 of his decision to commit to Virginia.
