The Virginia football team is off to a good start this season with a 6-1 record and bowl eligibility in hand. It seems like the on-field momentum is carrying over to the recruiting trail. The Hoos added their third commitment of the week when Bethel defensive back Derek Fisher made the call in the Class of 2027.

Fisher announced his decision on social media.

Fisher joined two other commitments from over the weekend. Oscar Smith quarterback Lonnie Andrews III and Hampton defensive lineman Gene Jones started this October recruiting surge. All three players come from the Tidewater region, which would be the most in a single class for the Cavaliers since 2014 if it holds up. The 2014 class included Quin Blanding, Andrew Brown, and Chris Peace, who all became contributors for the Virginia defense.

Overall, the program has 4 commitments in the fold for the Class of 2027. In addition to the in-state trio, New Jersey tight end Sean Currie has also made UVA his pick. All 4 players carry a 3-star rating from 247 Sports. Andrews is a 4-star prospect for On3/Rivals, while the other players have 3-star ratings at this time.

Fisher is ranked No. 14 in the state by 247 and No. 12 by On3/Rivals. He is the No. 60 safety nationally by 247 and the No. 63 safety by On3/Rivals. His offer list shows a prospect with a lot of interest. In addition to Virginia, Fisher claimed offers from Virginia Tech, Duke, Syracuse, and Wake Forest within the ACC as well as Old Dominion, East Carolina, Hampton, and others. He picked up the UVA offer in February of this year.

The 6'0", 185-pound safety made numerous visits to Charlottesville. He attended a junior day recruiting event plus spring practice and then attended the recent Florida State game where Virginia won in double overtime.

This continues a focus on secondary recruits in recent cycles for the Hoos. UVA brought in 9 defensive backs from the transfer portal this offseason with 6 expected to have only one year of eligibility so upcoming classes will need to address the long-term plan at the defensive back position. The Class of 2026 includes potential defensive backs Alex Dunn, Jayden Covil, and DaMari Carter, all three picking Virginia as in-state prospects too.
