The Virginia football team continued winning on the field Saturday with a comeback victory against Washington State. The Hoos picked up a win on the recruiting trail too when Oscar Smith quarterback Lonnie Andrews III made the call.

Andrews is the second commitment in the 2027 class alongside tight end Sean Currie. Andrews also joins 2026 cornerback Jayden Covil as Oscar Smith players that have committed to the Cavaliers.

Andrews announced his decision on social media.

The 6’0”, 180-pound corner comes from a successful high school program. Oscar Smith won the Virginia Class 6 State Championship in 2024 and the team is off to a 6-1 start this fall.

The quarterback’s commitment came during a visit to Charlottesville for the Washington State game. Andrews had visited previously for a spring practice and picked up the official offer in May. He also had offers from Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Boston College, East Carolina, James Madison, Old Dominion, and more. 247 Sports rates him as a 3-star prospect and No. 14 in the state, while On3/Rivals rates him as a 3-star prospect and No. 8 in the state.

Andrews fits the mold of what UVA appears to like at the position. The Hoos like to have a quarterback that can pass from the pocket, execute on the move in RPO situations, and potentially be used in the run game at times. He appears to offer those possibilities. As a sophomore, Andrews posted more than 3,100 yards of total offense and threw 29 touchdown passes to help his team win that title. That included 450 yards rushing per Prep Redzone.

Andrews is the first quarterback commitment in the 2027 class for Virginia. The Hoos have set up a potential line of succession at the position through high school recruiting. They took Bjorn Jurgensen and Cole Geer in the Class of 2025 and both players are currently on the roster. Geer appeared in the William & Mary win earlier this season. Ely Hamrick is the lone Class of 2026 high school commit.

The Cavaliers also brought in transfer quarterbacks Chandler Morris, the current starter, and Daniel Kaelin this past offseason. While Morris completes his eligibility this season, Kaeilin still has three years available.
