For the second time this summer, the Virginia football team stayed in state to secure a cornerback commitment. Oscar Smith High School defensive back Jayden Covil became the latest recruit to pick the Cavaliers, joining Rustburg High School’s Alex Dunn as corner commits in the 2026 class.

Covil announced his decision on social media.

The secondary is a primary focus for this recruiting cycle after Virginia ranked 121st in pass defense (263.1 yards per game) last season. UVA has not ranked higher than 84th nationally in interceptions over the last four seasons.

The Hoos brought in nine defensive backs from the transfer portal this offseason with six expected to have only one year of eligibility. So Virginia will need to replace those spots. Plus, corners and safeties are priority prospects in the transfer portal, making it a competitive position to fill each cycle.

UVA has used both the 2025 and 2026 high school recruiting classes to address the back end of the defense too in an effort to develop the secondary through recruiting and reduce the need to rely on the portal. In 2025, Corey Costner, Josiah Persinger, CJ Spence, Justin Rowe, Montino Williams Jr., and Lukas Sanker all committed to Virginia. So far in 2026, Covil and Dunn have picked the Cavaliers.

Covil is a 3-star recruit in ratings from the national recruiting services. 247 Sports ranks him as a 3-star and the No. 24 player in the state of Virginia. Rivals and On3 both made him a 3-star as well with On3 ranking him as the No. 31 player in the state. He had offers from Wake Forest, Duke, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech within the ACC plus offers from Penn State, Connecticut, JMU, ODU, and more.

The 5’10”, 165-pound corner comes from a successful high school program. Oscar Smith won the Virginia Class 6 State Championship last fall. Covil had 3 interceptions during the season. MaxPreps.com also shows 8 interceptions with 2 forced fumbles for Covil during his sophomore season in 2023.

This pushes UVA’s current 2026 class up to 10 members. Covil and Dunn both come from in-state high schools as defensive backs. Linebackers Derek Uran and Dallas Brannon alos project to that side of the ball. The Hoos have also secured commitments from quarterback Jae’Oyn Williams, receiver Josiah Teasley, quarterback Ely Hamrick, offensive lineman Michael Gildea, offensive lineman Dylan Biehl, and receiver Dylan Cope as prospects that project to the offense.
