The Virginia football team hasn’t just been focused on the secondary in the transfer portal recently. On Wednesday night, Class of 2026 Alex Dunn defensive back out of Rustburg announced his commitment to the Cavaliers. That’s the second high school recruit from the secondary in the past week with Dunn joining Class of 2025 commit Lukas Sanker.

Dunn announced his decision on social media.

Dunn took an unofficial visit to Virginia early in May and reported an offer on May 15. That visit extended his relationship with UVA after he attended team camp last summer. He also camped at Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.

The rising senior was also in Charlottesville for the Dogwood Track Classic earlier this month and posted a 14.27 run in the 110-meter hurdles that set a new school record as the top ranked time in Class 3A this season.

A strong track season followed a solid fall on the football field for Rustburg. Dunn posted 31 tackles (19 solo), 7 pass breakups, and 6 interceptions. He returned 2 INTs for touchdowns. On special teams, Dunn had 1 kickoff return touchdown and 2 blocked field goals. He also played some receiver with 11 catches for 224 yards. Dunn received first-team All-Seminole District and first-team All-Region 3C honors at defensive back.

The recruiting services do not have rankings for Dunn at this time.

The focus on the secondary throughout the offseason comes after Virginia ranked 121st in pass defense (263.1 yards per game) last season. UVA has not ranked higher than 84th nationally in interceptions over the last four seasons.

The Hoos brought in nine defensive backs from the transfer portal this offseason. Both the 2025 and 2026 classes have addressed the back end of the defense as well. In 2025, Corey Costner, Josiah Persinger, CJ Spence, Justin Rowe, Montino Williams Jr., and Sanker all committed to Virginia. So far in 2026, Jordan Vann (safety/Ohio) and Dunn have picked the Cavaliers.

At 6’1” and 178 pounds, Dunn does fit the physical mold of many secondary recruits for the Hoos. Of the nine transfer portal commitments this spring, seven measure at least 6’1”. For eight high school recruits in these past two classes, seven measure at least 6’0”.
