The Virginia football program continues to work the transfer portal for additions to the offensive side of the ball this spring. For the second time on Saturday, that meant bringing in a new offensive lineman. Syracuse tackle David Wohlabaugh Jr. chose the Cavaliers on the same day that Arkansas State tackle Makilan Thomas made the call.

Wohlabaugh announced his decision on social media.

Wohlabaugh continues a theme in the portal this cycle for the Hoos: they want more experience up front. He's the latest addition to have starting experience as he logged 6 starts among 21 appearances so far in his college career. Along with Thomas, UVA now features at least 11 linemen that have previous starting experience. Monroe Mills (out for the season with a torn ACL), Kevin Wigenton II, Tyshawn Wyatt, Brady Wilson, Wallace Unamba, McKale Boley, Noah Josey, Drake Metcalf, Jack Witmer, and Ethan Sipe all have started at some point in their careers.

A 6'6", 301-pound lineman, Wohlabaugh began his career at Kentucky before he transferred to Syracuse ahead of the 2023 season. At Kentucky, he redshirted in 2021 after playing in two games and then appeared in 8 games with 1 start in 2022. That start came in the season opener, though, and at the end of the season, he entered the portal.

At Syracuse, he started 2 games at right tackle in 2023 before a season-ending injury forced him off the field. Last fall, he made 3 starts in 9 games with most of his work coming at left tackle. Wohlabaugh allowed just 2 sacks on 174 dropback snaps in pass protection. He earned an 80.0 pass blocking grade in the Pro Football Focus data.

Tackle became a renewed focus for the Cavaliers during the spring transfer portal window. In addition to losing the Louisville transfer Mills to an ACL injury, last year's starting right tackle Blake Steen departed UVA as a transfer. The tackles play a key role in pass protection and Virginia ranked 123rd and 132nd nationally the past two seasons in sacks allowed.
