While flurries hit the Charlottesville area Sunday, the Virginia football team secured a flurry of commitments in the transfer portal. Morgan State cornerback Ja’Son Prevard made the call for the Cavaliers on Sunday after a visit this past week.
Prevard announced his choice on social media.
Prevard had a visit scheduled with Texas Tech as well, but told The Daily Progress that on his UVA visit, he “felt the energy and it felt like it’s where I needed to be.” This is a similar route to Virginia as Jam Jackson, a corner that transferred to the Cavaliers last offseason after starting off at Robert Morris in the Football Championship Subdivision. Jackson ended up starting all 12 games this past season on the way to 58 tackles.
Prevard put together two solid seasons at Morgan State. The 6’3”, 185-pound corner earned FCS Freshman All-American honors in 2023 after he posted 22 tackles and 8 passes defended that included 1 interception. He led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in passes defended that season. In 2024, he made 19 tackles with 6 passes defended. He had an INT and a fumble recovery.
This move provides depth and competition at a position of need. While Jackson remains at Virginia, the Hoos will lose multiple players at corner from last year’s roster. Kempton Shine and Kendren Smith completed their eligibility, while Trent Baker-Booker and Aidan Ryan entered the transfer portal. Dre Walker also returns, but has dealt with injuries his first two seasons.
