The Virginia basketball program continued its methodical work in the transfer portal with a backcourt addition this week. Jan Vide, a guard out of Loyola Marymount, chose the Cavaliers per a report from League Ready recruiting analyst Sam Kayser.

This is the fourth portal pickup during this offseason cycle for the Hoos.

Vide started 27 games last season at Loyola Marymount while averaging 28.8 minutes per game. He averaged 12.1 points while shooting 45.3% from the floor (50.8% from 2-point range and 32.3% from 3). Vide also averaged 3.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. That ranked sixth in the West Coast Conference for assists per game. Vide’s 1.74 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked 11th in the league.

That ability to handle the ball fills a need for the UVA roster where only Chance Mallory has much point guard experience. Vide will bring a different look in that area. Mallory is listed at 5’10”, while Vide will join the roster at 6’6”. All three of the portal additions on the wing check in at 6’4” or taller.

Vide did not attempt many 3-pointers, taking only 31 on the year. Over his three-year college career, including his first year at UCLA and the last two at LMU, Vide has made 14 of 43 3’s (32.6%). It will be interesting to see if that volume goes up any at Virginia. The Hoos shot 1,018 triples last season with a 3-point rate (percentage of total attempts) of 46.7%, which ranked 36th nationally.

Outside shooting aside, Virginia clearly focused its transfer portal work on adding more experienced depth to a roster that returned a strong core of contributors from last season. UC Irvine’s Jurian Dixon, St. Louis’ Kalu Anya, and Arkansas State’s Christian Harmon all have multiple seasons of college basketball experience already.

Dixon was Big West Freshman of the Year in 2024-2025 and then jumped up to a First-Team All-Big West level last season. Anya started 47 of 49 games at Brown before he headed to St. Louis to start all 34 for games in 2024-2025. He redshirted last season. Harmon moved from Gulf Coast State College (junior college) before he joined Arkansas State and earned Third-Team All-Sun Belt recognition.

All four additions also appear to have the versatility to play multiple positions, giving Ryan Odom the lineup flexibility that he liked to use last season. Vide fills in as a combo guard that could also play alongside Mallory due to his size. Dixon and Harmon could potentially be combo guards as well as wings. Anya looks to be someone that could play in either frontcourt spot.
