Virginia basketball fans knew there would be a different feel to this season after the Tony Bennett chapter closed and the Ryan Odom era began. Fullcourt defense vs. the Pack Line. 3-pointers early and often vs. 3-pointers frequently but selective. Uniforms.

One thing that hasn’t changed much? Winning non-conference games.

The Cavaliers have opened Odom’s first season with a 9-1 record. UVA’s most recent victory came at the John Paul Jones on Tuesday as it took down Maryland Eastern Shore, 84-60. That improved the Hoos’ non-conference record at home to 110-11 since 2009-10.

Prior to that, Virginia defeated Texas and Dayton in two important games outside of league play. The Wahoos won their first ever meeting against the Longhorns, 88-69. That gave the program a 2-1 mark in the ACC-SEC Challenge. UVA also had a winning 14-8 record in the old ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The Cavaliers improved to 4-0 all-time against Dayton with that 86-73 victory.

The early season success has moved Virginia into a good spot when it comes to NCAA Tournament hopes. The Hoos sit in the top 30 of the NET rankings. Of course, there are a lot of games to be played. UVA has two Big Ten opponents on the schedule still (Maryland and Ohio State), another non-con game with American, and the full ACC slate remaining.

With the team on a break for exams until the Terps come to town on Saturday, Dec. 20, fans are taking stock of where things stand. What has looked the best so far? Who has been a good surprise? Even with the 9-1 start, what areas remain concerning? Is the rotation working? What about minutes?
