With the Virginia basketball team gearing up for the first season of the Ryan Odom era, more news hit the headlines this week. It stirred up excitement from fans once again.
Later in the week, Virginia released the first episode of its preseason docuseries “Proving Grounds” on Thursday. UVA announced the “four-part all-access video series” to give a closer look inside Odom’s first season with the Hoos. Future episodes will be released monthly.

Also this week, UVA announced a second exhibition game in October. The Hoos will travel to Vanderbilt on Thursday, Oct. 16 in what will be the first glimpse at Odom’s first team in action. That joins the preseason stage in October with the previously announced home exhibition against Villanova. The Cavaliers host the Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 24.
More schedule news followed as Virginia released the full non-conference part of its campaign. Those preseason exhibitions in back-to-back weeks set the stage for the season opener on Monday, Nov. 3 when Rider comes to th John Paul Jones Arena. That’s the first of four home games to open the season with North Carolina Central (Friday, Nov. 7), Hampton (Tuesday, Nov. 11), and Marshall (Saturday, Nov. 15) also ahead of the already known Greenbrier Tip-Off two-pack against Northwestern (Friday, Nov. 21) and Butler (Sunday, Nov. 23).
The schedule news included another previously unknown neutral site game too as the team will travel to Charlotte on Saturday, Dec. 6 to face Dayton. With previously announced games against Northwestern (Big Ten), Butler (Big East), Texas (SEC), Maryland (Big Ten), and Ohio State (Big Ten), it adds the Atlantic 10 to the slate. Altogether, it’s a schedule with some name recognition among opponents but not an unending string of preseason top 15 teams.
