Terry Holland, legendary University of Virginia men’s basketball coach and athletics director, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the age of 80. The University will honor his legacy with a public memorial service on Saturday, May 6 at 2 p.m.
Former players, administrators, and coaching peers from a career at UVA, Davidson, and East Carolina will be among the speakers at the John Paul Jones Arena. The official ceremony lineup will be announced on Monday. Doors for the tribute open at 1 p.m. Both parking (in the lots around the JPJ and McCue Center) and entry are free.
Holland retired in 1990 as Virginia’s all-time winningest men’s basketball coach with a 326-173 record, a total wins mark that stood until this past season. He helped the Hoos reach 2 Final Fours in 1981 and 1984 and 2 Elite Eights in 1983 and 1989) among 9 total NCAA Tournament appearances. Holland’s teams also won the 1976 ACC Tournament and the 1980 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) as well as three consecutive ACC Regular Season titles from 1981-1983. He was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1982.
After stepping away from coaching, Holland worked as the athletics director at Davidson, UVA, and ECU. Among his accomplishments as an AD, he helped generate the Scott Stadium expansion project and was a key figure in the creation of the John Paul Jones Arena at Virginia. East Carolina named a facility after him as the Terry Holland Olympic Sports Complex. He also helped expand Dowdy Ficklen Stadium there and women’s sports became fully funded during his tenure.

Reece Beekman NBA Draft Question Still Piques Interest
As the Cavaliers refill their roster via the transfer portal - there have been three additions in April - a big question still remains at the forefront of fan minds. Will Reece Beekman remain in the NBA Draft? He declared in late March and has until May 31 to withdraw that entry. Some projections have named Beekman as a potential second round pick.
Beekman averaged 9.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.8 steals this season while shooting 35.1% from 3-point range. As the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, he is an elite defender and distributor.
The NBA Draft Combine will be held in Chicago during the week of May 15-21. Word on invitations to that event should come out earlier in the month. The NBA Draft will be held on Thursday, June 22, while the NBA Draft lottery to determine the order of the top 14 selections is set for Tuesday, May 16.
Malcolm Brogdon Named NBA Sixth Man Of The Year
One second round pick from Virginia continues to add to his professional resume. Malcolm Brogdon, the 36th selection in the 2016 NBA Draft, recently received the NBA's Sixth Man Of The Year Award. He previously won the NBA Rookie Of The Year Award as well, making him only the second player in league history to win both (Mike Miller).
Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists for the Boston Celtics this season. He appeared in 67 regular season games and came off the bench in all of those contests. Brogdon finished third on Boston’s roster in points per game.

Trey Murphy III Shares Year 2 Video
Another former Virginia player that drew some attention this past season was Trey Murphy III. He started 65 games in New Orleans where he averaged 14.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals while shooting 40.6% from 3-point range.
Murphy scored a career-high 41 points against Portland in March and hit 10 3-pointers in a game against the L.A. Clippers a few days later. Video links to those two performances can be found here and here.
