It's transfer portal season in college basketball with more than 1,000 players already entering their name as of Monday night per VerbalCommits.com. Virginia certainly is not immune from the roster movement with Kadin Shedrick now entering his name in the portal where he joined Francisco Caffaro and Isaac Traudt.

Shedrick spent four years in the Virginia program starting with a redshirt year for the 2019-2020 season. He appeared in 11 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020-2021 season, which did not count against any student-athletes eligibility due to an NCAA waiver. For the 2021-2022 season and this past season, he started 34 games with 65 total appearances. That leaves him with two years of remaining eligibility.

Shedrick's season followed an interesting path this past season in terms of playing time. He opened the year as a starter and started 14 of the first 15 games. During that time, he averaged 22 minutes, 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocked shots. Later in the year, the Hoos shifted lineups to more of a small ball look with Ben Vander Plas inserted as a starter. Beginning with the Jan. 14 game against Florida State through the end of the regular season, he appeared in just 11 of 14 games and averaged 10.0 minutes, 2.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 0.5 blocked shots. After Vander Plas was injured prior to the NCAA Tournament, Shedrick played in all four postseason games and started the NCAA Tournament game against Furman. In those four games, he averaged 21.0 minutes, 8.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.8 blocked shots.

For his UVA career, Shedrick averaged 6.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. Over his last two seasons with the increased role, he averaged 6.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. He ranked 3rd in the ACC in blocked shots last season and 5th in the same category this season.

The Cavaliers now have witnessed multiple players transfer out of the program in the same year for three consecutive years. This season, Caffaro, Traudt, and Shedrick have entered their names. In 2021, Justin McKoy, Casey Morsell, and Jabri Abdur-Rahim exited the program. In 2022, Carson McCorkle and Igor Milicic Jr. were scholarship players that transferred. While that is not outside the norm given the large numbers of college players in the transfer portal in general, it is a source of frustration for many Virginia fans.
