The Virginia women’s basketball team made its first move in the transfer portal on Monday when it picked up a commitment in the frontcourt. Australian forward Adeang Ring made the call for the Cavaliers after spending her freshman season at Central Florida.
She announced her decision on social media.
Ring played in 23 games as a true freshman at UCF this season, logging 12.5 minutes per game. She averaged 3.7 points and 3.2 rebounds with 12 blocks, 9 steals, and 8 assists on the season. She had at least 7 points in 5 games.
Ring’s best outing came against Oklahoma State in January when she had 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. That came during a 10-game stretch where she received 16+ minutes in all but one contest. It started with three straight games where she put up 9 points with 3 rebounds against TCU, the season-best effort against Oklahoma State, and 9 points with 11 rebounds against Iowa State. She had 6+ points in six of those games and another double-digit rebounding performance against Baylor with 10 boards. The Hoos may be estimating that Ring can be more consistently productive with minutes.
This addition looks like at least part of a replacement plan for Latasha Lattimore, who departed the Hoos via the transfer portal and signed with Mississippi. Lattimore averaged 14.3 points and 8.2 rebounds with 69 blocked shots in 30.6 minutes per game for UVA while starting 29 times. At 6’4” with the ability to run the floor, Lattimore offered versatility as a forward with some defensive presence.
At 6’5”, Ring appears to bring similar potential to the table. When Central Florida signed her as the No. 2 player out of Arizona in the 2024 class, coach Sytia Messer noted “Adeang’s defensive presence” and “her skill level at her size” as what made her an interesting prospect as a recruit. She played for Bella Vista College Prep and Team Why Not on the EYBL AAU circuit.
Some short high school highlights for Ring can be seen on YouTube here and here.
The Cavaliers will remain active in the transfer portal after this pickup. Lattimore, Edessa Noyan, Hawa Doumbouya, Casey Valenti-Paea, and Payton Dunbar all entered the portal. Other than Lattimore and Dunbar, who committed to Providence, the other three players have not announced a new destination.
