The Virginia men's basketball team made a big recruiting splash in the Class of 2024 on Sunday night. Jacob Cofie, a 4-star power forward, out of Washington state committed to the Cavaliers, becoming the first recruit of this cycle.

Cofie announced his decision on social media.

The Hoos offered Cofie just two months ago and he made the call for Virginia after an official visit last weekend. He had offers from Oregon, Washington, Ohio State, Colorado, Southern Cal, and others, but things moved quickly in UVA's direction over the summer. He played for Seattle Rotary on the AAU circuit and put together strong back-to-back summer seasons. 247 Sports rates Cofie as the No. 93 prospect in the nation in 2024 and as the top player out of Washington.

At East Catholic High School just outside of Seattle, Cofie averaged 18.7 points and 11.4 rebounds as a junior. The 6'9", 225-pound forward brings a ton of versatility to the floor with the ability to score inside and outside plus defend multiple positions. That includes 3-point range and ballhandling ability to set up teammates, putting him the mold of successful Virginia combo forwards like De'Andre Hunter, Sam Hauser, and Trey Murphy III in recent seasons.

Cofie follows the commitments of Blake Buchanan, Anthony Robinson, Elijah Gertrude, and Christian Bliss from the 2023 recruiting cycle. Bliss reclassified from 2024 to enroll this semester and take a redshirt year. That's a strong group that could grow around upperclassmen like Isaac McKneely, Ryan Dunn, Andrew Rhode, and Dante Harris potentially in 2024-2025. Check out the Scholarship Picture page for the outline.
