While Major League Baseball winds down its season, college baseball teams are ramping up in the fall. That includes Virginia, where fans can get a glimpse of the Hoos multiple times over the next few week.

In fact, fans in town for the Norfolk State football game on Friday can see the second UVA intrasquad scrimmage of the week. That’s scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at Davenport Field. The first scrimmage of the week was held on Thursday afternoon where Reid Howard reportedly homered.

There are also preseason exhibition games on tap in September and October. The Hoos host Gardner-Webb on Sunday, Sept. 19 and travel to Georgetown on Sunday, Sept. 27. October begins with a neutral site game against Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 3 in Fredericksburg. UVA’s final exhibition is back at Davenport on Saturday, Oct. 24 against James Madison. Game times for all four exhibitions will be announced closer to the dates.

That’s not the only news around Virginia baseball right now. In August, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced that Chris Pollard had been elected as the ABCA’s Fourth Vice President. His term begins in January 2027 and per the organization’s guidelines will advance to a higher officer position each year (Third Vice President 2028, Second Vice President 2029, First Vice President 2030, and ABCA President 2031). Pollard, entering his second season with the Cavaliers, has been an ABCA member for 30 years and also serves as the Chair of the NCAA Division I Committee.

Within the UVA program, Pollard announced in August that Eric Tyler had been promoted to Associate Head Coach. He first came to Virginia with Pollard as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator.

“We talk a lot in this program about earned recognition and earned opportunities. Eric Tyler has absolutely earned this promotion. He possesses an exceptional level of emotional intelligence. His talent in relationship building has been so vital to the current momentum within the program,” Pollard said in a news release.

Part of the current momentum for the Hoos is with 2028 recruiting. Virginia has picked up commitments from six prospects already in this cycle. Players making the call for the Cavaliers include Antonio Burke (RHP with a fastball in the mid-90s), Tyler Caperton (switch-hitting shortstop), JT Taylor (highly thought of catcher), Thomas Piscorik (rapidly rising shortstop), Ty Howard (RHP viewed as top in-state pitching prospect for this class), and Jack Spitaleri (left-handed outfield hitter with power).

If you missed this piece from The Sabre earlier this summer with updates on Virginia baseball and the 2027 season, make sure to give it a read. And one last note before you check out the weekly picks below focuses on a pair of former Virginia baseball standouts. Playing for the Chesapeake Baysox, the Double A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, Griff O’Ferrall and Ethan Anderson both homered in the same game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels this week. The Baysox held on to win that contest on Wednesday, 8-7.

Perris Jones was honored during the season opener for making a difference off the field. Jones wrote a book “Ashes to Endzone” about the lessons Jones has gained from adversity, loss, and personal growth. He suffered a career-ending spinal cord injury in 2023 that threatened his ability to walk again.
