No. 5 seed St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) upset top-seeded DeMatha Catholic, 53-52, to reach the WCAC postseason tournament finals. The Cadets, led by University of Virginia-bound guard Casey Morsell, will meet Gonzaga in the WCAC championship game on Monday, February 25 at 8 p.m.
After losing by 13 earlier in the season, St. John’s had the Stags on the ropes in the second regular season matchup between the two teams. The Cadets led by two as Morsell, who had 29 points in the contest, stepped to the line for a 1-on-1 with 16 seconds remaining. He would miss the front end, though. DeMatha would force overtime before escaping with a 6-point win.
Morsell kept DeMatha from capturing another close win over his team with a game-clinching block of Villanova-signee Justin Moore as time wound down on Sunday.

North Carolina prep powerhouse Greensboro Day captured the 2019 NCISAA 4A state championship in impressive fashion, winning all three playoff games by double-digits, including a 67-53 victory over Christ School in the title game this past Saturday. The Bengals have captured the state championship three straight years, the last two with University of Virginia class of 2021 commitment Carson McCorkle on the team.
Per the Greensboro News & Record, which has a full game story you can read by clicking here, McCorkle poured in 14 points for the Bengals in the championship game. Greensboro Day assistant coach Jeremy Spidell tweeted the following about McCorkle following the Bengals’ latest championship victory.
Carson McCorkle made big shot after big shot all season long. He's a gamer and had 12 huge second-half points in last night's State Championship. Love the fire and aggressiveness he played with down the stretch. Congrats, @carson_m2433 on your second State Title!?? #gdshoopfam

I couldn’t be happier for our seniors as they helped lead us to another state championship. Tradition never graduates and this senior class demonstrates that. This team is the 1st team in GDS history to #3peat. I love each and every player like a son! #gdshoopfam @GreensboroDay pic.twitter.com/0fQfBRTMRt

Recruiting Notes
- Holly Springs (N.C.), which features Virginia class of 2019 forward/center recruit Kadin Shedrick, earned the no. 5 seed in the 4A state playoffs. The Golden Hawks (19-4) therefore receive a first-round bye and will face the winner of Tuesday’s (February 26) matchup between Broughton and Green Hope in second-round action on Thursday, February 28.
- Virginia head coach Tony Bennett has been seeing a lot of prized class of 2020 forward Henry Coleman III lately.
First, the Trinity Episcopal (Richmond, VA) junior was in Charlottesville on February 9 to see the Duke/Virginia game. Then, on February 15, Coleman III was in Charlottesville helping his team defeat St. Anne’s-Belfield (Charlottesville, VA) in a road contest. Virginia is one of many Division 1 scholarship offers being considered by Coleman III, who recently added Oklahoma to his offer sheet. Duke is among those showing serious interest.
Trinity Episcopal moves on to the VISAA Division 1 state playoffs. The no. 7 seed Titans host The Potomac School in first-round play on February 26. With a win, Coleman III and company would move on to face no. 2 seed Bishop O'Connell.
