Shortly after Virginia's 77-75 win Wednesday night, South Florida coach Stan Heath remarked, unprompted mind you, that UVa' Jamil Tucker was the "biggest surprise" and did more than the Bulls "expected" in the Cavaliers' victory. Tucker posted a line of 15 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. And while Heath was not surprised, it may be time for opponents and fans to take notice of Tucker.
With eight returning starters on the defensive side of the ball for a team that only gave up 18.7 points and 306.8 yards per game, much was expected this fall. And while the Clemson offense has not lived up to its preseason billing, the defense has for the most part. The Tigers have given up 26 points on average in their five loses and only 11 points per game in five wins. The question for Saturday: Can the Hoos score over 20?
Clint Sintim simply doesn't know what will be running through his head when he runs through the tunnel and on to the field at Scott Stadium for the last time Saturday as the Cavaliers take on Clemson. "It's going to be a special day," Sintim said. "I don't know how I'll feel about it."
There may not be much time at all before Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA) defensive end William Hill is off the board. The 6-4, 260-pound senior has not set a specific day to announce his college decision, but he feels he should have a decision by sometime next week.
What did fans end up getting in the first ever meeting between South Florida and Virginia? A rugged, hard fought battle that frequently materializes when teams from the Big East and ACC get together. At the final buzzer, the Cavaliers had squeaked out a 77-75 victory thanks to balanced scoring, a little defense down the stretch, and enough free throws to get by - barely.
